Gentle Sleep Tips for Babies and Toddlers

DoulaBarcelona

Summer often brings unexpected sleep challenges for babies and toddlers.

If your little one has suddenly started resisting bedtime, waking earlier, or sleeping more restlessly, you're not imagining it. Longer days, warmer temperatures and changes to your routine can all affect sleep.

The good news? Most of these changes are completely normal.

In this guide, I'll explain why summer affects sleep and share simple tips you can start using today.

Why Does Summer Affect Baby Sleep?

There are four main reasons why sleep often changes during the summer months:

✓ Longer daylight hours

✓ Hotter bedrooms

✓ Changes in routine

✓ More stimulation and later evenings

For many families, it's not one single factor but a combination of all four.

Your baby hasn't forgotten how to sleep. Their environment has changed.

1. Longer Evenings Delay Melatonin Production

NewbornSleep

Your baby's body relies on light to regulate sleep.

From around 2–3 months of age, babies begin producing melatonin, often called the sleep hormone. As it gets darker, melatonin rises, helping your little one feel sleepy.

During summer, however, daylight lasts much longer. In places like Barcelona, it can still be bright well after 9 p.m.

This means your baby's brain may still think it's daytime, making bedtime feel more difficult.

What you can do

✔ Close curtains or blackout blinds one to two hours before bed.

✔ Dim the lights around your home.

✔ Keep your bedtime routine calm and predictable.

2. Why Is My Baby Waking Up So Early?

Has your baby suddenly started waking at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m.?

If so, the sunrise may be to blame.

Just as darkness helps increase melatonin, early morning light tells the brain it's time to wake up. During the summer, this happens much earlier than in the winter.

What you can do

✔ Use blackout blinds or curtains to keep the room as dark as possible.

✔ Avoid starting the day too early if your goal is a later wake-up time.

✔ Keep your morning routine consistent, even during holidays.

Sometimes these simple adjustments can make a significant difference.

3. Does Hot Weather Affect Baby Sleep?

Like adults, babies often sleep more restlessly when they're too warm. Because they regulate their body temperature less efficiently, hot nights can lead to more frequent wakings.

You may notice:

  • More frequent night wakings.

  • Difficulty settling back to sleep.

  • Restless sleep.

  • Increased comfort feeding during the night.

What you can do

✔ Keep the bedroom cool and well ventilated.

✔ If you have air conditioning, use it to create a comfortable sleeping environment rather than making the room cold.

✔ A fan can also help improve airflow, provided it isn't blowing directly onto your baby.

Comfort plays a much bigger role in sleep than many parents realise.

4. How Should I Dress My Baby on Hot Summer Nights?

This is one of the questions parents ask me most every summer.

During the warmer months, overheating is usually a bigger concern than being too cold.

What you can do

✔ Choose lightweight, breathable cotton fabrics.

✔ On particularly warm nights, a short-sleeved bodysuit or even just a nappy may be enough.

✔ Instead of checking your baby's hands or feet, gently feel the back of their neck. If it feels sweaty, they're probably too warm.

Remember, every baby is different, so use your baby's comfort as your guide.

5. Should I Move Bedtime Later During Summer?

Many parents wonder whether they should delay bedtime simply because it stays light outside for longer.

The answer is... it depends.

Some families prefer keeping exactly the same bedtime throughout summer. Others naturally enjoy later evenings during holidays and adjust their routine slightly.

The important thing is making sure your child is still getting enough sleep over 24 hours.

What you can do

✔ Watch your child's sleepy cues rather than the clock alone.

✔ If bedtime is later, try to allow for a slightly later morning where possible.

✔ Avoid letting overtiredness build up over several days.

Flexibility is absolutely possible, but balance is key.

6. Should My Baby Still Nap During Summer?

GentleParenting

Summer often means busy days.

Trips to the beach.

Swimming pools.

Family visits.

Travelling.

It's tempting to skip a nap in the hope your child will sleep better at night.

In reality, the opposite is often true. An overtired baby usually finds it harder to fall asleep, wakes more frequently overnight, and may wake earlier the next morning.

What you can do

✔ Protect naps whenever possible.

✔ If you're out for the day, don't worry if a nap happens in the buggy or the car.

✔ Focus on your child's overall sleep rather than aiming for a perfect schedule every single day.

Some flexibility is part of summer, and that's completely okay.

Summer Sleep Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

One of the biggest worries I hear from parents is that a few weeks of holidays will undo all the progress they've made.

It won't.

Summer naturally brings later evenings, family gatherings, holidays, travel, and different routines.

Those experiences are part of childhood too.

One late bedtime won't undo months of healthy sleep habits.

Rather than striving for perfection, focus on consistency where you can. Keep your bedtime routine familiar, protect sleep when possible, and remember that this season is temporary.

Your little one can enjoy summer and still have healthy sleep habits.

You're Not Doing Anything Wrong

ExpatFamiliesBarcelona

If your baby's sleep has changed this summer, it doesn't necessarily mean you've created bad habits.

More often than not, they're simply responding to changes in light, temperature and routine.

Once you understand why sleep changes during summer, it becomes much easier to respond with confidence instead of worry.
