Pregnancy Friendships: Why Building Connections During Pregnancy Makes All the Difference

PregnancyFriendship

Pregnancy is one of the most transformative experiences in life. It’s not just your body that changes, your emotions, routines, relationships, and priorities shift dramatically. For many expectant parents, this time brings both excitement and uncertainty.

With all the preparation, appointments, and life adjustments, one of the most important things you can do is build friendships with other expectant couples.

Why Pregnancy Friendships Matter

Meeting other couples who are going through the same journey can have a profound impact. Sharing feelings, excitement, nerves, worries, and anticipation, creates a sense of community and reassurance. It’s comforting to know that others are navigating the same challenges, asking similar questions, and feeling the same mix of emotions.

Pregnancy friendships are not just about sharing experiences, they also help you prepare emotionally for the massive life change that comes with welcoming a baby. When you meet regularly with other couples, you start to form a support network that can continue after your baby is born. Having friends who understand the realities of newborn life, sleep deprivation, breastfeeding challenges, and the emotional rollercoaster, can make your postpartum experience much smoother and less isolating.

The Role of Community in Preparing for Birth

Feeling supported during pregnancy doesn’t just ease emotional stress, it also helps with practical preparation for birth and early parenthood. Knowing other couples who are thinking about the same decisions, learning the same techniques, and facing similar challenges provides perspective and confidence.

For example, discussing hospital protocols, birth plans, and different birthing options with others can help you make informed decisions. Sharing experiences about relaxation techniques, hypnobirthing, and labour preparation provides reassurance that you are not alone and helps you feel more in control of your birth journey.

Your partner also benefits from being part of a supportive community. Learning how to support you during labour through practical tools, creating the right atmosphere, and understanding your needs can make the birth experience more positive for both of you.

Introducing the Birth & Baby International Workshop in Barcelona

This is exactly why I created the Birth & Baby International Workshop here in Barcelona, designed for expectant couples who want to prepare for birth while building meaningful connections. This workshop combines practical preparation for labour and newborn care with the opportunity to meet and bond with other couples going through the same journey.

The workshop covers essential topics for expectant parents:

  • Birth planning: How to create a birth plan, understand hospital protocols, and compare public versus private options.

  • Labour preparation: Relaxation techniques, hypnobirthing, and understanding the physiology of labour to feel more confident on your big day.

  • Partner support: Practical tools for your companion to help you during labour and create the best atmosphere, lighting, music, and emotional support.

  • Newborn care essentials: Basics of breastfeeding and sleep, so you can navigate the early weeks more smoothly.

How the Workshop Builds a Pregnancy Community

A unique feature of this workshop is the focus on connection and support. Couples start by meeting over a relaxed coffee, allowing everyone to get to know each other. From there, the group meets weekly for 4 consecutive weeks online for an hour at lunchtime making it easy to join from home or work. One of this sessions, the third one, is in person at 7pm.

On weekends, couples are encouraged, but not obliged, to meet for informal catch-ups. This flexibility ensures that friendships can develop naturally and support each couple’s needs. The friendships formed during pregnancy often continue into the postpartum period, providing emotional support and shared understanding during the early months with your newborn.

The Impact of Pregnancy Friendships on Postpartum Life

The benefits of connecting with other expectant couples extend far beyond pregnancy. When your baby arrives, you already have a support network of people who understand exactly what you’re experiencing. You can share triumphs, challenges, questions, and even the exhaustion of early parenthood with people who truly “get it.”

This sense of community reduces isolation, strengthens confidence in your parenting decisions, and creates a positive environment for both you and your baby. Pregnancy friendships can even influence your baby’s early life, as feeling supported and confident as a parent contributes to a calmer, more connected start for your child.
